Roger Schoenhals has been a hiker, pilot, and fire lookout, and on the front lines of adventure in the Northwest. In his latest book, Hikes, Flights, and Lookout Stories: Life Lessons from High Places (Redemption Press) he recounts his experiences in the outdoors, and draws from them inspiring spiritual applications.
The former pastor/businessman/college professor and writer has published more than twenty books and 3,000 articles. In this latest life-lesson book he tells compelling true accounts ranging from a grueling 50-mile hike on Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail; a near-death experience on an instrument landing; a fire breaking out inside his lookout station; a menacing storm and dehydration in the Enchantments, and a funeral service for two kittens on Granite Mountain.
Schoenhals and his wife lived “off the grid” in Icicle Canyon in the Alpine Lakes area of the Cascade Mountains for fifteen years. He doesn’t sugar-coat his experiences. He is honest about his errors of judgment, and modest about his occasional heroics. He says, “I am motivated by the thought that God has dealt with me patiently through my failures, adventures, and humorous happenings.”
The author feels that the unusual experiences of life provide valuable insights to help us gain perspective and grow stronger in our walk with God. Reader Sara Martinez, comparing the book to Prairie Home Companion or Front Porch Tales says, “The stories made me laugh, gasp, and were like looking in a mirror at times.”
