New Children’s Book “Black Wall Street: The Spirit of Community” Ties into the 100th Anniversary of the Destruction of the Greenwood community in Tulsa

In this book, LaQuitta Barnes seeks to empower young leaders with the history of the Greenwood community in Tulsa. The destruction it suffered, and how the community rebounded from the tragic event of 1921

“Black Wall Street: The Spirit of Community is essential for any picture book collection exploring community, racial equity, and self-reliance. While the events explored are tragic, the book leaves us feeling hopeful and reflective,” said Malene Golding, Literacy Consultant at Golding Touch Education Consulting, LLC who was full of praises for the book.

The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the tragic event and this motivated the writing and publishing of “Black Wall Street: The Spirit of Community” by LaQuitta Barnes. Written for children between the ages of 8 and 12, the book beams into the resilient nature of the Greenwood community and how it was able to engage a turnaround.

In the book, “Black Wall Street: The Spirit of Community”, LaQuitta Barnes exposes children to a story that is often overlooked in history books and it highlights the beauty of the over 300 Black-owned businesses and residential hub located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This book tells how a community rebounded from a tragic event and restored the legacy of entrepreneurship, success, and the importance of community.

An Amazon review on the book said, “LaQuitta Barnes first book shows the promise of a writer destined to bring to light the untold stories of our country. Like many aspects of our nation’s divided history, the story of Black Wall Street is less known than it should be. Mrs. Barnes brings the characters to the fore in a factual, yet touching manner.”

Parents and educators who want to expose kids to historical facts and promote the importance of community members supporting each other should get their hands on the book. It also ties well with financial literacy and entrepreneurship for the youth.

The book is available for purchase on Amazon.
