“A Trip on the Tundra Explorer” by Jacob Deskins has been released worldwide. This 32-page children’s book tells the story of Sean, who is feeling nervous about entering the fourth grade, and his teacher Mr. Simmons, a new arrival to the small Alaskan town of Kwigillingok. Sean’s grandmother invites Mr. Simmons to accompany the family on an adventure into the tundra, coaxing both the student and teacher out of their comfort zones. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations, this story is about more than a blossoming relationship between student and teacher. Throughout their adventure, the group must overcome challenges and setbacks, and in the process, readers learn about the beautiful Alaskan tundra alongside Mr. Simmons. They encounter wildlife, eat akutaq (traditional Alaskan ice cream), and have to help one another traverse the incredible, sometimes unforgiving landscape.

Drawn from his own experiences moving from Ohio to rural Alaska to be a schoolteacher, Deskins shows highlights the tundra, as well as the people who live there, and shows how one adventure can lead to bolstered confidence and lasting friendships.

About the author:

Jacob Deskins had just graduated from Cincinnati Christian University in 2020 when he saw an ad that said, “Teach in rural bush Alaska!” Three weeks later, he and his wife left everything behind in Columbus, Ohio, population 1.2 million, to start his teaching career and an adventurous new life in Kwigillingok, Alaska, population 320. A Trip on the Tundra Explorer is the first of the author’s forthcoming series inspired by his adventures in Alaska, and in the classroom.
