Honolulu, HI – July 20, 2020 – COVID-19 has made many parents of young children realize one thing very quickly – childcare is hard work. For the members of the nonprofit Nanny Sitter Education Fund (NSE Fund), which launches on July 30, 2020, the value of passionate, committed childcare providers has always been evident. The fund’s goal is to propel dedicated childcare professionals forward in their careers by providing grants which are put toward high-quality childcare education. By providing childcare professionals with the means to undertake college-level education and the like, Nanny Sitter Education Fund is also improving the quality of education and care that children receive, setting young people up for a lifetime of success.

While there are more than 1.1 million childcare professionals in the United States, and while families and the broader economy rely on them, they are often faced with long hours, unstable work, and reduced wages. Recently, 80% of childcare professionals surveyed said they face financial instability. The only way for childcare professionals, who are overwhelmingly female and often from diverse communities, to get out of the financial difficulties they face is by offering them the chance to better their career prospects through affordable or free education.

“We know that higher-paying positions, and those offered by nanny staffing agencies, call for a combination of experience and education,” explains Maribel Avery, Founder & Vice Chair of Nanny Sitter Education Fund. “Through my work at a childcare staffing agency, I receive hundreds of applications weekly from passionate, dedicated women who would make excellent candidates, but who have none of the educational qualifications needed for the positions we are staffing. With their restricted economic means, there was little chance for them to advance in their careers. I knew that I had to help change that; I had to give these hard-working women a hand up.”

While improving the lives of nannies is one of the stated goals of Nanny Sitter Education Fund, educating childcare professionals also has immense benefits for the children under their care. High-quality early childhood education has been repeatedly shown to improve school success, employment rates, and lifetime earnings. Children who receive quality care from a young age have lower rates of drug use, smoking, and delinquency. It has also been estimated that for every $1 invested in high-quality early childhood education, the public receives $17 in lifetime economic benefit.

“We know that the only reason nannies and babysitters aren’t undertaking additional childcare education is a lack of financial means. When surveyed, 93% of childcare professionals said they wanted or were willing to undertake quality childcare education. Every dollar donated to NSE Fund will go toward alleviating the economic burden of education for childcare professionals in need. There is a movement in America today that emphasized the need to improve the economic stability and wellbeing of women and minorities. There is no better way to do that than through affordable or no-cost education.
