The alleys of my hometown are narrow and deep. On the afternoon of the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month, I followed my mother to the ancestral temple to worship. The rural paths were difficult to walk, and the air was filled with the fatty aroma of braised goose and the burnt smell of gold paper. My mother carried a bamboo basket, neatly packed with items for worship, walking at a steady, unhurried pace, just as she has done every New Year for the past fifty-plus years.
The temple was already packed with people. Candlelight flickered in the air, illuminating the majestic statue of the deity on the altar. Then, tall incense sticks were lit, offerings were arranged neatly, voices rose and fell in conversation, and gold paper curled into ashes in iron buckets, rising like black butterflies into the air. I saw Auntie next door kneeling for a long time with her eyes closed, her lips moving slightly, as if she was telling the deities all her innermost thoughts of the year. At that moment, I suddenly understood: for Teochew people, worshipping deities is not about begging, but about confiding – handing over the exhaustion, grievances, and hopes that cannot be spoken to others, entrusting them to a wisp of blue smoke and the compassion in the unseen.

Interior of the Ancestral Temple
It’s similar to what enables long-term cooperation with clients – often it’s not the price, but that “invisible something.” There was a client who, during initial contact, pressured the price down to almost no profit margin. At such times, I didn’t rush to argue. Instead, I just sent him a WeChat message every week: what tests we ran this week, which model’s parameters were optimized again, if we had new suitable products he might be interested in trying. As time went on, he realized I never misled him; the models I recommended really helped him save on BOM costs, and the parameters were accurate. Gradually, he began to trust me.
This kind of trust is like the incense burned for worship – invisible and intangible, but it exists, accumulating slowly.

Teochew people believe in deities, but what they truly believe in is an invisible order. The divine is in the clouds, and also in the human heart; it is causality, and also destiny. Isn’t the creed we follow in sales exactly the same? Every time we truthfully inform about parameters, every time we proactively handle after-sales issues, every time we say “Let me find a way” when the client is anxious – it’s like adding a stick of heartfelt incense to our own “incense burner.” If this incense burns long enough, a response will naturally come – not a divine miracle, but the response of human hearts.
Similarly, in business, the principle is “Without trust, a person cannot stand,” and “If a deal doesn’t happen, goodwill remains.” Worshiping deities merely embodies this trust and righteousness into a ritual, allowing it to be passed down through generations amidst the smoke and fire. And we children who grew up in these old alleys bring the piety from before the altar into the office buildings, into every quotation, every visit, every contract – the deities are not on the shrine; the deities are in the hearts of every client who chooses to trust you.
I think this is probably the essence of Teochew people’s faith: to work diligently in the visible world, and to plant good karma in the invisible world. And all the orders and transactions are merely the natural blossoming of flowers within this web of causes and conditions.
