On Saturday, January 14, 2023 in York, South Carolina, the reigning Miss I AM H.E.R. International, Dr. Chanell Dingle-Sermon, along with a host of guests graced the scene at the NAACP’s 42nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade, which is also the longest running MLK parade in the state. Miss I AM H.E.R. International’s float guests consisted of two women as guest queens and five girls as guest princesses.

The float traveled down North Congress St. playing powerful portions of a Dr. King’s speech with crowds of citizens eager to greet and celebrate the occasion with them. “It’s important for Miss I AM H.E.R. International to be present in this parade because people of color need to see more positive images and representations of themselves in others. We made a statement, being that we are black women and young ladies showing up as royalty and being beautiful within our own right. I believe Dr. King would’ve been proud of us,” says Dr. Sermon.

Miss I AM H.E.R. International represents the platform, I AM H.E.R. International, founded by Apostle Dr. Dershay Zorn. This platform is created to help women internationally fulfill their God-given destinies while celebrating their impact in the world based on the seven mountains of influence known as education, family, ministry, business, government, arts and entertainment, and the media. The “Miss I AM H.E.R. International” title represents the woman, who is defined of God, that is healed, empowered, and delivered from her past and uses her experiences to help others.

Dr. Sermon, a doctor of education and an HBCU (historically black college and university) graduate, is an award-winning educator, minister, life coach, President’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, and the first Miss I AM H.E.R. International. She further states, “We as women of color are still healing from feeling like we’re not enough based on societal expectations for beauty and acceptance. We are actively seeking out sources within our own community to be empowered. But at the end of the day, because we overcame so much in this life, we are resilient”.
