Under the tutelage of 2018 Broward Coach of the Year, Renea L. Moss, The Speech and Debate Team of Miramar High School capped off a historic season by competing at the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Nationals and National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Nationals. Having previously being successful at several other Speech and Debate Tourneys like the Sunvitational Speech & Debate Tournament, Florida Blue Key Speech & Debate Tournament and others, the speech and debate team became one of the top 20 schools in Speech under 2019 NSDA National School of Excellence in Speech category and came second in Dramatic Presentation at the NCFL.
The NSDA National Speech & Debate Tournament is one of the largest academic contests and brings more than 4,500 students from more than 1,200 schools from across the country for a week of rigorous competition to determine national champions.
The NCFL is a volunteer organization that provides support for debate in two ways. First, it encourages the development of local leagues that support small debate tournaments throughout the United States. Second, operates a large national tournament each year that has more than 2,000 competitors. The tournament always occurs over Memorial Day weekend.
The team which was thought of being dismantled two years ago participated in the 2019 Florida Forensics League Varsity States (FFL) and became 2019 FFL DI (Dramatic Interpretation) and POI (Programmed Oral Interpretation) Champions, just like the way they were champs in 2018. The team also became champions at Sunvitational Speech & Debate Tournament POI and DI 2019 as well as champions in Florida Blue Key Speech & Debate Tournament POI and three of six finalists in DI and also received FFL State Team Interp Award. It is indeed a historic year for the team.
Added Debate Coach Renea L. Moss: “This has been an exceptional year for the growth and development of the debate and speech program at Miramar High School. Through exceptionally hard work, collaboration, and veteran leadership, the debate program has exceeded expectations. Nationals is a great opportunity to showcase the versatility of our student-competitors.” The coach continued “One of the things I love about our team is that as these kids qualified and kept doing well, and kept seeing success, the rest of the team poured their heart and work into those kids because they know they are representing Miramar High School’s speech and debate.”
