Mildred Bradshaw is a lonely British widow whose once happy life has become quiet and isolated following the deaths of her husband, Eric, and her beloved cat, Coco. During a visit to Leeds railway station, she unexpectedly meets Reuben Wilcox, a young Rastafarian musician hoping to find somewhere for his band, Star Time Crew, to rehearse.
Their chance conversation develops into an extraordinary friendship when Mildred offers Reuben and his fellow musicians the use of her empty cellar. As the young men bring music, food and companionship into her home, Mildred begins to rediscover a sense of purpose. At the same time, she and the musicians are forced to confront assumptions, prejudices and suspicions within themselves and their wider community.
Through humour, reggae music, Rastafarian culture and emotional storytelling, Mildred Meets Rasta examines race relations, loneliness among older adults, community cohesion, identity and belonging. The novel offers an optimistic perspective on what can happen when people move beyond stereotypes and take the time to understand one another.
“I wanted to explore what can happen when people from very different backgrounds genuinely take time to understand one another,” said Tongogara. “The story examines race, culture, loneliness and community through characters who challenge stereotypes and discover their shared humanity.”
The novel combines social commentary with a warm, character-driven story. Mildred’s growing relationship with Reuben, Asher, Binghi Man and Jah Ben introduces her to unfamiliar music, language, food and beliefs. In return, her generosity gives the musicians a place where their creativity and ambitions can grow.
Tongogara’s interest in Rastafarian culture, reggae music and the changing social landscape of modern Britain helped inspire the novel. The book took approximately two years to complete, including research, writing, editing and revision. Particular attention was given to developing believable characters from different racial, cultural and generational backgrounds while avoiding simplistic stereotypes.
Mildred Meets Rasta will appeal to adult fiction readers, book clubs, reggae and Rastafarian culture enthusiasts, and readers interested in multicultural Britain, social issues and stories about unexpected friendship.
