Since graduating with his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University Of Illinois College Of Law in 2004, Michael Strauss has redefined what it means to be a rising star. Leaving college with the F. Dennis Franz Award, given annually to the top law student in the field of Family Law, Strauss soon established himself as a founding partner of Schlesinger & Strauss, LLC, a firm dedicated to the needs of family law clients from across seven counties including adoption, divorce, separation, premarital agreements, paternity custody and support, and juvenile cases.
Strauss wasa fixture on the Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Star listfrom 2014 through 2017 before being selected to the List of Super Lawyers in 2018. Super Lawyers is an independent rating service that bases its rankings on a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Each candidate is evaluated on twelve rigorous criteria (including verdicts and settlements), with only 2.5% of lawyers from across the US given the Rising Star Ranking and only 5% ranked as a Super Lawyer. Strauss was also listed as one of the state’s most talented and influential lawyers under 40 by the Chicago Law Bulletin in 2014. In 2018, he was recognized with the Outstanding Community Achievement Award by the Lake County Housing Authority and the Access to Justice Award by the Lake County Bar Association. He closed the decade with the prestigious Richard H. Teas Legislative Support Award by the Illinois State Bar Association in 2020.
But despite this impressive catalog of recognitions and achievements, Strauss is first and foremost a man driven by a passion for supporting people through some of the most difficult, challenging times in their lives. Recognized widely for his work supporting low-income clients, Strauss is also the vice-president of the Board of A Safe Place, an organization that provides comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence including safe custody exchanges and monitored visitations.
A certified mediator, Strauss is also a respected Child Representative and Guardian Ad Litem working for and in the best interest of the children of Illinois. He has testified before a legislative committee of the Illinois House of Representatives on several proposed amendments to laws focused specifically on the best interest of a child in often contentious cases concerning parenting time with each parent. Not surprisingly, he is also a frequent guest speaker at family law workshops both locally and across the state as well as serving as the co-editor of the local Bar Association’s monthly publication.
