Chula Vista Elementary School District is no doubt home to some amazing teachers. One Special Education teacher in CVESD, Melissa Moreno, was selected as one of five San Diego County Teachers of the Year, representing the quality and dedication of her teacher colleagues throughout the District.
The announcement came as a shock to Mrs. Moreno as it was made at the “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” gala event. “I was surrounded by so many amazing educators. I was in absolute shock. I sat there for a few seconds to regain my composure because I was so emotional, and then I was happy and overjoyed,” she recalled.
Although she always knew she wanted to be a teacher, Mrs. Moreno found her passion for Special Education while she worked as an instructional assistant in an elementary Special Education classroom during college. She went on to teach a pre-K through 2nd grade mild/moderate special day class at Rosebank Elementary School. Her classroom is described by Rosebank Principal Neil MacGaffey as warm and loving. He says, “she is a master at putting in place the structures necessary for students to understand what is expected each day and to be able to thrive and learn at their level, at their own pace.”
Other examples of outstanding teachers are Melissa Noble and Jennifer Ware, who were celebrated along with Mrs. Moreno as Chula Vista Elementary School District Teachers of the Year. Mrs. Noble was also one of the top 10 finalists in the county competition and taught 4th and 5th grade at Clear View Elementary. Mrs. Noble goes beyond the mark as a teacher to care for each individual student so they can be successful academically and as a human being.
Mrs. Ware taught 3rd grade at Anne & William Hedenkamp Elementary School. Assistant Principal Ray DeVore said Mrs. Ware’s, “commitment to helping each student be their best self is inspiring. She makes others feel welcome, cared about, heard and part of the Hedenkamp team. She is making a difference for kids!”
