Author Maria Vyasa has released a new educational video exploring Bhagalamukhi, one of the Dasa Mahavidyas from the Indian tantric tradition. The video presents her ideas on connecting the Dasa Mahavidyas with the six chakra system originated in the Kubjika School of Tantra.
Vyasa proposes Bhagalamukhi symbolizes the coming together of the five breaths (pancha vayus), the five pranas/energies of the body and the start of the rising of Kundalini through Shushumna. Therefore she proposes Bhagalamukhi to be connected to Manipura chakra in the six chakra system. The video is based on her 2024 book Kundalini – a baptism of fire: The journey of the mystic. “My main contribution is connecting the Dasa Mahavidyas with the six chakra system originated in the Kubjika School of Tantra, in a unique and comprehensive way.”
The Dasa Mahavidyas are a group of goddesses from the tantric tradition representing different wisdom aspects of the divine. The ten goddesses are Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bhagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala. The video combines academic research with oral traditions from living goddess traditions as well as personal contributions to the symbology of the goddesses.
Vyasa presents both established scholarly understanding and her own interpretations of the symbolic meanings. She explains how these goddess figures relate to the Kundalini process, a spiritual transformation described in yogic texts.

Understanding Bhagalamukhi
Bhagalamukhi is connected to stopping and stilling. Bhagalamukhi is said to be the first in the army of Tripurasundari. Tripurasundari is connected to iccha shakti and therefore to Shushumna (the central energy channel). Bhagalamukhi being the first in the army of Tripurasundari, Vyasa proposes, symbolizes that Bhagalamukhi is the coming together of the five breaths (pancha vayus), the five pranas/energies of the body and the start of the rising of Kundalini through Shushumna. In the yogic system this happens in the navel area (kanda) by breath retention (kumbaka).
Vyasa therefore proposes Bhagalamukhi to be connected to Manipura chakra and the navel area (kanda) where the breath is held and all the pranas of the body are held together in kumbhaka (breath pause). This theory is strengthened by the fact that the pranas of the in-breath and the out-breath are said to be the moon and the sun, and Manipura is said to shine from the light of the sun and moon as jewels (mani-jewel, pura-city/place) which might explain the color of Bhagalamukhi being yellow.
