Magnolia Elementary School Teacher Teams Elevate Classroom Learning Through Collaboration

At Magnolia Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District, collaboration is an important part of the education and curriculum provided to the students. What this means is that each grade is a team that shares ideas and helps one another to meet a common goal. Principal of Magnolia Elementary School, Sarah Robinson, says, “The Kindergarten team is an example of what [collaboration] looks like at its highest level.”

The five Kindergarten teachers at Magnolia Elementary implement this idea of working as a team to its fullest. As each teacher brings something different to the table, Kindergarten teacher Alissa Thomas says, “We each take those ideas and implement them in our classroom in our own way because we are all different teachers.” Another teacher on the team, Morgan Weinstein, appreciates how the collaboration between her Kinder Teammates makes work so much less stressful, allowing her to fully be there for her students and be her best self for them.

The volume of work that gets done is another huge benefit to teaching as a team and in collaboration. As more work is able to get finished, the teachers have more time and energy to put into each student individually, which sets an example to the students about what teamwork can accomplish. Tamie Peters-Spencley, another Kindergarten teacher at Magnolia, believes students benefit greatly from this type of teaching because students get a variety of thought put into their lessons. She says, “There’s no one way to do something. We’re all very open; we share information, we connect with each other, and it just makes it easy for me to come to work.”

What really makes the combined efforts of the Kinder Team at Magnolia work so well is that every teacher on the team is accountable and dependable. Megan Espinoza explains that she loves being friends with her team of co-workers that she knows will be there for her whenever she needs them. Michele Kisbert says, “it takes the burden off to know that we’re all working for the same goal. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to count on your teammates.”

The well-oiled machine of collaboration that runs Magnolia Kindergarten also takes advantage of rotations so that every student learns from each of the five teachers on the team. This creates a sense of community, teachers the students how to share and communicate, and shows them how to work together as a team.
