Mabelle Prior continues to blaze a path of diverse women in the arts

Geneva, Switzerland – July 23, 2020 – At a time when there is much discussion about race, representation and the media, Mabelle Prior stands out. The multi-faceted Swiss-Ghanaian broadcast journalist and entrepreneur is a well-known personality in Switzerland. As the founder of the Swiss Most Beautiful Pageant and the author of several globally published books, including Beyond Race, Deadly Friendship, Voyage to the Dark Continent and The Secret Code, Mabelle Prior is used to using her position to highlight diversity.

Being a well-known personality, Mabelle Prior is no stranger to the spotlight, throughout the year, It is common for Mabelle Prior to be booked for high-profile events, galas and fundraisers where she serves as a hostess or special guest. While Mabelle is equally at home in ballrooms and newsrooms, there have been incidents in her past in which Mabelle Prior felt she was lucky to escape with her life.

Back in 2000, Mabelle Prior was booked to host a Reggae Festival at the HO Stadium in Ghana, West Africa. She has been looking forward to the festival along with thousands of others who had gathered that day. The festival had been highly anticipated and was due to feature top performers from the world of Reggae. It was to have been a monumental festival and had received top billing in the Ghanaian live music calendar.

With Mabelle Prior on stage, things suddenly took a turn for the worse. A rumour had spread that two of the top performers would not be performing after all. The crowd became, agitated and rapidly turned hostile and aggressive. Several individuals in the crowd began to throw things at Mabelle including broken bottles. She was terrified and felt her life was in danger. Mabelle believes it was only the rapid intervention of her uncle, army Captain George Nfojoh, who sent soldiers and bodyguards rushing to her side which kept her alive.

Rather than scaring her away from pursuing her dreams, Mabelle Prior let the incident influence her in positive ways. Since that frightful day, she has embraced her career with an abundance of confidence and is never afraid to voice her opinions.

“No matter how frightened we are, how much intimidation we face, it’s importance to stand up for what we believe in, “explains Mabelle. “I’m proud to say that I have always used my career and my skills to highlight causes I believe in. No cause is more important in my heart than the embrace of diversity. When my daughter watches television or reads books, I want her to be able to identify with the people she is seeing. That’s why I recently took her out on the red carpet with me to an awards show. I want her to know – to understand deep inside her heart – she, and little girls and boys like her deserve to be there. They belong there.”
