Lunkerville Explores the Mental and Social Benefits of Fishing

Special TV Mini Series to Broadcast on Discovery Channel in November.

New York, NY – Lunkerville, the five-time Sportsman Channel award-winning TV series that features real people with real fish stories, returns to Discovery Channel for a second year of it’s “Get Folks Fishing” mini-series; an initiative that creator and host Mike D hopes will inspire more people to consider recreational fishing as an important component of a healthy lifestyle.  It’s all part of his personal mission to have people experience the emotional and social wellness benefits of the sport — by showing them just how easy and accessible it is to actually do.

“The concept of Lunkerville was borne out of the trauma I experienced living in downtown Manhattan during the 9/11 attacks, witnessing the horror, then living through the aftermath” says Michael de Avila (aka Mike d). “I discovered fishing in Central Park as a stress reliever and it also helped me focus and become introspective in a good way. Soon I joined a fishing club and met people from all walks of life; folks I would never have met otherwise, and we fished together and became friends.  Fishing became so important to my wellbeing that I wanted to share the experience with others, so I created Lunkerville. And this year I launched the Get Folks Fishing Foundation which I hope will bring the industry and public together around the fishing-for-wellness message.

Lunkerville’s “Get Folks Fishing” mini-series features a dozen women, men and children from the USA and Canada teaching the viewers how easy and affordable recreational fishing can be. Episodes include:

  • November 6 – Panfish Express

Mike fun fishes for anything that fits in a frying pan with guests from New York, Ohio and Ontario. Techniques include crankbaits for perch, bass, pickerel, pike and rock bass; and live minnows for crappie, panfish and saugeye.

  • November 13 – Bass Bonanza

Mike learns how to catch smallmouth and largemouth bass in Connecticut, Texas and New York. Techniques include a square bill crankbait, shaky rig, grub jig and power drop-shot.  Featuring former NFL quarterback Kevin Kolb.

  • November 20 – A Shore Thing

Mike proves you don’t need a boat to catch fish as he joins anglers in New York, Hawaii and Florida to shore fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Techniques include a ceramic plug, shaky rig, soft stick bait, frog, propeller bait, and 3 inch grub.

  • November 27 – The Smaller the Better

Mike fishes from a rowboat, kayak and electric jon boat with fishermen from Ontario, New York and North Carolina. Jigs, soft stick baits, spinner baits and swim baits are techniques used to catch largemouth bass.

Lunkerville’s “Get Folks Fishing” mini series airs Saturday mornings in November before Major League Fishing at 6:30am. The episodes will also stream on Amazon Prime Video, Waypoint Outdoors TV and Fishing TV.
