Linbeck Group to Receive ENR Award of Merit for Texas Christian University Mary Couts Burnett Library

In the ENR Texas & Louisiana’s 2016 Best Projects competition, presented by Engineering News Record (ENR), Texas Christian University Mary Couts Burnett Library won an Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category.

Fort Worth / Houston, TX (August 16, 2016) — Linbeck Group, a Texas-based, technology-driven building construction firm, announced that its renovation and addition of the Texas Christian University Mary Couts Burnett Library has been honored with an Award of Merit in the ENR Texas & Louisiana’s 2016 Best Projects competition.

The Mary Couts Burnett Library is the heart and soul of Texas Christian University and the renovation and addition of the library is a crown jewel of the university’s strategic plan in becoming a world-class, values-centered learning institution.

The $32.8 million project, completed October 2015, is a vital component of TCU’s new Intellectual Commons. The Mary Couts Burnett Library fosters innovation, collaboration and cross-disciplinary connections on the Fort Worth campus.

As one of the original campus structures, the library is now an interdisciplinary, multimedia-rich environment — a dynamic element that modernizes and transforms TCU’s east academic precinct. A two-story reading room creates a campus presence, and the newly created formal entry that recalls the original library structure is a showcase for the campus core. The expansion also enabled restoration of the historic 1924-vintage Gearhart Reading Room to its original glory.

The east half of the library underwent a major renovation along with a 19,000 square foot addition. The renovation of all three floors included new roofs, floors, walls, mechanical and electrical equipment, furnishings and seating for students, progressive teaching space, a technology learning center and program space for new features.  Additionally, the east end of the library is now connected to the new Rees-Jones Building with a ground-floor plaza and a second-story sky bridge.

The library’s new west entry took shape with regal columns, elegant lampposts and wide, welcoming steps. The classic design aligns the library’s look with other TCU buildings and creates an impressive façade fronting University Drive.

The Mary Couts Burnett Library is now a high-tech, media-rich environment while continuing its traditional role of providing print books.

The ENR Best Projects award ceremony will take place October 19 in Houston. A full list of winners is available here: http://www.enr.com/blogs/4-texas-louisiana-stories/post/39997-announcing-enr-texas-louisianas-2016-best-project-winners
