Tony Award Winners in a Tale of Seduction and Betrayal
The play stars Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber as le Vicomte de Valmont and Tony Award winner Janet McTeer as la Marquise de Merteuil. The two are former lovers who plot to ruin an innocent young aristocrat’s reputation. The play is a tale of danger, seduction, and betrayal set in France in the 18th century before the French Revolution. The 30-year revival Broadway production will be directed by Josie Rourke.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses began previews at the Booth Theatre on Broadway on October 8. It is scheduled to officially open on October 30. The play will have a 15-week limited engagement that is scheduled to end on January 22, 2017.
The play also stars Tony Award nominee Mary Beth Peil, Birgitte Hjort Sorensen, Elena Kampouris, Raffi Barsoumian, Ora Jones, Katrina Cunningham, Josh Salt, Joy Franz, David Patterson, and Laura Sudduth.
Previous Productions of Les Liaisons Dangereuses
The play is adapted from the 1782 novel with the same title that was written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The novel created a scandal in France when it was published. The stage adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses was written by Academy Award winner Christopher Hampton. Hampton’s stage adaptation was produced on Broadway in 1987 and 2008 and won Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Hampton earned an Academy Award for the film adaptation of the story entitled Dangerous Liaisons.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses was revived at the Donmar Warehouse in London in the winter of 2015-2016. That was the first major production in London since the play’s debut in 1986. The London production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses was directed by Olivier Award nominee and Donmar Artistic Director Josie Rourke and starred Janet McTeer as Madame de Merteuil. The production in London was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Revival.
