Eindhoven, North Brabant, Netherlands – October 19, 2026 – The Dutch government renewed the Knowledge of Dutch Society exam in July 2025, and Dutch Light now offers a free 40-chapter inburgering exam ebook that covers the new version, alongside nearly 30 tools that let expats learn Dutch with AI at Learn-Dutch-with-AI.com. Dutch Light was founded by entrepreneur Violetta Bonenkamp, who moved to the Netherlands to build her startup and prepared for the exam herself.

Inburgering is the Dutch civic integration process that many newcomers must complete. It includes language exams in reading, listening, speaking and writing, and an exam on Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (KNM), or Knowledge of Dutch Society. The exams are run by DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs), the Dutch government agency responsible for them.

A renewed KNM exam since 1 July 2025

Since 1 July 2025, candidates have taken a renewed KNM exam, the first full revision since 2015. According to the Dutch government, the new version puts more emphasis on knowledge than on behaviour and gives extra attention to the Holocaust, the ban on antisemitism and discrimination, and women’s right to self-determination. DUO advises candidates taking the exam after that date to practise with the updated practice exams.

The free inburgering exam ebook includes a chapter on the KNM changes since 1 July 2025 and how to avoid preparing with outdated material. Other chapters cover who must integrate in 2026, the three-year deadline, costs, free attempts and loans, fines and extensions, each exam part, a 90-day study framework, booking exams step by step and what happens after the diploma.

“The most common problems I see are old practice material, studying everything at once and too little practice with the exact situations the exam asks about,” said Violetta Bonenkamp, founder of Dutch Light. “I built Dutch Light around what I wish I had when I prepared for my own exam.”

AI practice for one skill at a time

Dutch Light’s practice tools let expats learn Dutch with AI one skill at a time at the A2 level, the elementary level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). They include a writing corrector, a speaking answer coach, reading and listening practice generators, a daily mini exam, a de/het article drill, word order and verb position trainers, form filling practice and a KNM practice question generator with a wrong-answer explainer.

The AI Dutch tutor is used in short rounds: the learner picks a level, answers in Dutch, reads a correction in simple English and tries again. Learners can also use KNM practice questions and a free self-assessment to find their weakest skill before choosing a study plan.

“AI is a patient practice partner for the moments when there is no Dutch speaker around to correct you,” Violetta Bonenkamp said. “We tell learners to use the official practice exams for the final format check, and AI for the hundreds of small repetitions in between.”

Dutch Light does not give legal or immigration advice. Its guides point learners to DUO and the official inburgering website for personal requirements, deadlines and exam bookings.
