In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, while newer data shows losses tied to scams originating on social media reached $2.1 billion in 2025 alone. In Canada, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported more than $704 million in fraud losses in 2025, with investment fraud accounting for the largest share.
