Hollywood Black Hair on Set: How Atlanta’s Own Deaundra Metzger is Fighting the Status Quo One Comb at a Time

The celebrity hairstylist for TV & Film production recently served as a department head for a new series filmed in Atlanta, produced by Samuel Jackson, and continues to use her craft to push for more inclusiveness in the movie industry

Celebrity hairstylist for TV & Film Deaundra Metzger is tending to Hollywood’s black hair problem on set by putting her craft to good use and offering her skilled services to cater to the beauty needs of black actresses. On March 11, 2022, a new series titled “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” produced by Samuel L. Jackson, is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV. Behind the scenes of the new series, Deaundra Metzger, served as the department head and supervised the hair department. Thanks to the quality of her work, she was also hairstylist to the leading actress Dominique Fishback for the new series.

Recently, some Black actors have spoken up against what they describe as “hair mistreatment” in Hollywood. Many of these actors of color narrated their experiences of racism which included being told there was no budget to cut their type of hair and not having a skilled hair stylist on set, among other reasons. While speaking to the Guardian Newspaper, Camille Friend, a top stylist who has worked on Black Panther, Tenet, and Captain Marvel, said it was wrong for hairstylists who lacked the proper knowledge on handling Black hair to work on film or TV sets.

“It’s 2021 and this is still a huge industry problem. There shouldn’t be hairstylists or makeup artists without knowledge of all hair textures and all colors of skin tones. There must be better education for all hairstylists and makeup artists,” explained Camille Friend.

Other Hollywood figures like Gabriel Union and Meagan Good have shared their unsavory experiences and reiterated just how important it is for production companies to make adequate provisions for skilled Black hairstylists on their production sets. Deaundra Metzger is an accomplished Celebrity Hairstylist who has successfully accumulated over 25 years in providing professional hair care services, both locally and nationwide. Widely regarded for her stellar work in the entertainment and film industry, Deaundra has been fortunate to amass a star-studded clientele that includes the likes of Monica, Fantasia, CeCe Winans, and many others.

Some of her work for film projects include: Tyler Perry’s House of Payne & Meet the Browns; BET’s American Soul (Season 1); First Wives Club (Seasons 2 + 3); Hunger Games; The Divergent Series, Jumanji 3; Black Panther; Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, Suicide Squad 2. Yvonne Orji (Vacation Friends, 2022); Dominique Fishback (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Executively Produced by Samuel Jackson, 2022) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till, 2022).

The mother, entrepreneur, and wife of 23 years is fighting the status quo of Black hair mistreatment by making her skills available to as many actresses and movie producers who require her services. Deaundra believes the movie industry should take the case of racial discrimination seriously.
