Hangzhou native Zhu Weiqiu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and specialist in mechanics, credits his success to the credo of “Interest is the best teacher.”
“Only when you are absorbed in it, can you make great achievements,” added Zhu, who was born into a family whose members were farmers for generations.
“My mother died a long time ago and my father had no time to care about my studies. At that time, studying was totally your own responsibility.”
After he graduated from junior middle school, he applied for further studies at Hangzhou High School, which was then regarded as the best high school in Zhejiang province, with his classmates.
However, Zhu turned out to be the only one among these examinees to be accepted by the school, and therefore embarked on his journey to becoming a scientist.
During his school years at Hangzhou High School, he often went to the library to read. It was there he began to dream about becoming a scientist.
Zhu was accepted by the then Huadong Astronautical University after graduating from high school, and completed his master’s degree at Northwestern Polytechnical University after college graduation. His research focus was the theory of non-linear vibration during his master’s program.
“Doing theoretical research is very tough and is not lucrative,” Zhu said. “It may take you more than a decade or even two or three decades to achieve something in a certain direction of theoretical research.”
“But if more young people would pursue it, our country will grow into a more powerful one in terms of scientific and technical strength.”
