Grammar Chic Offers Tips for Millennials on Resume Writing

With limited experience, millennials often struggle to create an effective resume. Grammar Chic advises on some do’s and don’ts of resume writing.

There’s no denying that the job market is fierce. There may be dozens of people all vying for the same position. Millennials may feel that they are at a disadvantage due to lack of experience, but there are still ways that they can make their resumes pop while remaining truthful. Grammar Chic weighs in on strategies to support millennials in creating standout resumes.

“One of the most important things to remember is quality over quantity,” says Amanda Clark, CEO of Grammar Chic. “A three-page resume filled with fluff will be less effective than a concise one-page resume that highlights key skills and achievements. Employers recognize that new graduates often don’t have years of experience to point to, but they can still show how they have made a difference in what they have done so far and what they bring to the table.”

Instead of detailing every job duty, focus on creating action- or results-oriented bullet points, recommends Clark. Millennials should look at how they have made an impact and what actions they took to drive results. Demonstrate professional growth as well. Be detailed enough to show context but brief enough that employers want to learn more.

“As you’re formatting your resume, try to keep it clean and simple,” says Clark. “Use straight-forward section headers and an easy-to-read font. You want a potential employer to be able to skim your resume with ease and follow your career progression and training. Avoid using overly large or small font sizes, fancy graphics, or highly technical jargon. You never know who will be reading your resume, so you want balance between technical terms and simple language.”

Millennials should also tailor their resumes based on the job description. Rather than making it very broad and all-encompassing, look at what the employer is searching for in a candidate, notes Clark. Zero in on the skills and abilities highlighted in the job opening and ensure that the resume touches on these points as applicable.

Lacking relevant experience or skills? Clark encourages job seekers to consider volunteer opportunities or professional development courses to bridge these gaps. Volunteer experience may be unpaid, but it can still be highly valuable and provide essential skills and training. It can be a way to network and explore job opportunities too. In addition, there are many online programs that offer free or low-cost courses for job seekers to boost their training. Employers like to see that candidates are invested in their careers and proactive about advancing their knowledge and skills.

“Talent comes in all forms,” says Clark. “Make yourself stand out by highlighting what you have to offer and showing employers how you can benefit their organization. Maybe you don’t have as much experience as someone else, but if they can see your potential and determination, that can go a long way. Craft a solid resume that conveys your strengths, abilities, and accomplishments and makes an employer want to bring you in to learn more.”
