The global trade in tantalum amounted to 401 million USD in 2015, fluctuating strongly over the period under review. A 34% drop in 2009 was followed by recovery over the next two years, until exports decreased again. Exports slightly increased in 2014 and continued to decline after. Overall, there was an annual increase of +2.4% from 2007 to 2015.

According to IndexBox estimates, USA became the leading global exporter of tantalum in 2014. In 2015, the USA’s tantalum exports totaled 127 million USD, which accounted for a 32% share in terms of global exports. Thailand, China, Japan, and Kazakhstan were the other key global suppliers of tantalum in 2015, with a 56% combined share of global exports.

Kazakhstan (+18.2% per year) and Thailand (+14.5% per year) were the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2015. USA significantly strengthened its position in terms of global tantalum exports, growing its share from 17% in 2007 to 32% in 2015.

On the other hand, USA (24%, based on value terms), Mexico (12%), Indonesia (9%), the Czech Republic (7%), and Taiwan (6%) were the leading destinations of tantalum imports in 2015. Imports to Indonesia grew rapidly from 2007 to 2015. By contrast, the Czech Republic slightly contracted its imports of tantalum over the same period. Indonesia’s share in terms of global imports increased significantly (+9 percentage points), while the share of the Czech Republic illustrated negative dynamics (-6 percentage points).
