Genève – 20 November, 2025 – The globally recognised Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system is rapidly approaching the 3 million mark, a milestone that underscores how the world’s businesses are embracing verified digital identity to build trust and transparency in global finance.
According to the latest report from the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), more than 2.86 million active LEIs have now been issued worldwide, with 81 000 new identifiers added in Q3 2025 – a quarterly growth rate of 2.9 percent. Renewal rates are also on the rise, reaching 57.1 percent in the third quarter, up from 56.4 percent in Q2.
Why 3 Million LEIs Matters
As the global LEI system expands, it is evolving into a universal layer of business identity. With more organisations adopting LEIs, the benefits extend across banking, compliance, trade, and digital commerce:
-
Trust and Transparency: LEIs give every legal entity a unique, verifiable ID, making it easier to confirm who’s behind a transaction or business relationship.
-
Digital Efficiency: From financial onboarding to global supply chains, LEIs streamline verification and reduce time-consuming manual checks.
-
Regulatory Momentum: Markets such as the EU, India, and the Gulf region are driving growth through financial regulations and digital transformation initiatives.
-
Lower Risk, Higher Clarity: A shared identity standard helps combat fraud and money laundering while supporting smoother global trade.
“Reaching the 3 million mark is more than symbolic – it’s proof that verified digital identity is becoming a standard for global business,” says Michael Bjerggaard, LEI Code Specialist at LEI Service. “Every new LEI adds a small but vital piece to the world’s trust infrastructure, helping companies operate faster, safer, and more transparently.”Explore More About LEIs

About the LEI
The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies legally distinct organisations engaged in financial transactions. Developed in response to the 2008 financial crisis, the LEI system is governed by the GLEIF under the oversight of the Regulatory Oversight Committee (ROC). It is now considered a cornerstone of transparency and trust in the global digital economy.
