Abstract
Global cherry production amounted to 2,241 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level.Overall, the global cherry output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +19% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cherry production attained its maximum volume of 2,246 thousand tonnes in 2014, leveling off in the following year.
Over the analyzed period, an increase in global cherry production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the cherry output in the immediate term.
The world cherry harvested area amounted to 463 thousand ha in 2015, which was 5.3% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total harvested area of cherry peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for cherry globally.
The global average yield of cherry amounted to 50 thousand hg/ha in 2015, falling by -2.8% from the previous year figure. The yield figures recorded an downward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at -0.9% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest cherry yields were recorded in 2009, when it peaked at 56 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these figures throughout the analyzed period.
