Castor oil Imports

In 2017, imports of castor oil seeds worldwide amounted to 637K tonnes, waning by -2.8% against the previous year level. In general, it indicated a prominent growth from 2007 to 2017: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, castor oil imports increased by +24.6% against its level of 2014. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 21% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, castor oil imports attained its maximum volume of 655K tonnes in 2016, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, castor oil imports amounted to $964M in 2017. In general, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, castor oil imports attained its maximum level of $1B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Castor oil Imports By Country

China (267K tonnes) represented the key importing country with an import of around 267K tonnes, which recorded 42% of total imports. France (61K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the U.S. (61K tonnes), Germany (55K tonnes), and the Netherlands (31K tonnes). All these countries together occupied near 33% share of total imports. Thailand (23K tonnes), Japan (18K tonnes), Italy (17K tonnes), and Belgium (10K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, Belgium (+14.8%), Thailand (+8.4%), the U.S. (+3.2%), Italy (+3.1%), and Germany (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2007-2017. France, the Netherlands, and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2007 to 2017, the share of Thailand, Germany, the U.S., and China decreased by -2.0%, -2.1%, -2.6%, and -29.4% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($385M) constitutes the largest market for imported castor oil seeds worldwide, making up 40% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the U.S. ($97M), with the share of 10% of global imports. It was followed by France, with the share of 10%.

From 2007 to 2017, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of castor oil imports in China totaled +16.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: the U.S. (+7.4% per year) and France (+4.6% per year).

Castor oil Import Prices By Country

The average castor oil import price stood at $1,514 per tonne in 2017, ascending by 29% against the previous year. In general, it indicated a measured growth from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when import increased by 38% against the previous year level. In that year, average import price for castor oil reached its maximum level of $2,105 per tonne. From 2012 to 2017, growth of average import price for castor oil failed to regain its strength.

Average import prices varied noticeably amongst major importing countries. In 2017, major importing countries recorded the following import prices: in Italy ($1,654 per tonne) and the U.S. ($1,592 per tonne), while China ($1,442 per tonne) and Japan ($1,472 per tonne) were among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by the U.S. (+4.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
