Gilbert Pharmacy Recommends Elderly and Young Children Get Flu Shots Now

New pharmacy aims to educate the community on the importance of timely immunizations.

January 24, 2019 – Gilbert, Ariz. – Last winter was one of the most severe flu seasons on record with nearly 80,000 deaths in the US, including a record-high 180 children. While each year sees fatalities due to the flu virus, this mortality rate was extreme—and surprising—given that the season’s severity was not out of the ordinary. Gilbert Pharmacy, a new independently owned pharmacy in Gilbert, Ariz., recommends the community get ahead of a potential crisis this year by getting vaccinated early.

While the flu shot isn’t a 100% guarantee of not contracting the flu, taking precautions can greatly reduce both the severity of issues as well as chances of death should patients become infected. While the vaccine doesn’t cover every strain of the virus, the Centers for Disease Control has reported that this year’s shot is a good match for the strains that are currently circulating1. This is great news for those who have been hesitant to get the vaccination.

The most vulnerable populations when it comes to getting the flu include the elderly (those aged 65 and higher), people who have existing health conditions, and young children. Pregnant women who get the flu can also be at a higher risk, as are their unborn children. Last year, 90% of deaths associated with the influenza virus were seniors.

“Our pharmacy is passionate about educating the community on the benefits of getting vaccinated,” shared Cornelius (last name), owner of Gilbert Pharmacy. “Too many people don’t understand why the flu shot is important or, worse, they think getting the shot can cause them to contract the virus. That’s just not true.”

Gilbert Pharmacy offers the flu shot onsite, and the cost is usually covered by patients’ health insurance, including Medicare, Medicaid, and AHCCCS. They are partnering with nearby physicians to get the word out about the importance of getting vaccinated.

“This is an important issue, especially for the most vulnerable in our community,” continued Cornelius. “Whether patients come to us or choose another provider, our goal is all about education.”
