At Garden Grove Unified School District, creating opportunities for students to explore future career options is important. A key element to preparing students of today for their futures is to expose them to STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. This is why multiple Garden Grove Unified elementary schools are transforming spaces on their campuses into fully functioning STEAM Labs.

Recently, the ocMaker Challenge competition was held, challenging students to design and build or repurpose a product that is useful. GGUSD had more teams place in this STEAM-based competition than any other district in Orange County. While the students who entered this competition are in middle and high school, GGUSD understands that the earlier students can have their hands on STEAM experiences, the better. Early exposure to STEAM promotes learning in a unique way, where real-world applications to STEAM topics can help students on their way to success in academics and in careers.

The STEAM Labs that have been or will be implemented into GGUSD elementary schools will give students the upper-hand when it comes to future jobs. The labs will allow students to receive hands on experience in robotics, coding, science experiments, art projects, videography, green screen video presentations, and more. Through project-based learning in these areas, students will gain experience that will translate to real world applications, creating amazing opportunities for their futures.
