Igneous AI, LLC, a startup co-founded by two geology PhDs from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has launched AIgneous Million Whys, a daily trivia and fun facts app that gives users one why-question per day across science, history, and everyday life. The app is live on iOS, Android, and web, with every answer choice explained – including the wrong ones.
The name AIgneous pairs “AI” with “igneous rock,” a nod to the co-founders’ earth science roots. Yanchong Li and his UIUC co-founder built the app from a personal habit of chasing unexpected ‘why?’ moments during graduate study in earth and planetary science. The pair wanted to bring that curiosity habit to adults with no time for structured courses.
Since launch, users from 49 countries and 299 cities have joined the platform, according to information published on the company website. The community has contributed more than 5,000 questions to date, also according to the company. Daily trivia and fun facts on the platform cover science, history, technology, animals, and everyday life.
The platform also includes a photo-to-question feature. Users can photograph any subject and the app generates several why-questions from the image, each approaching it from a different angle. A photograph of a coffee cup, for example, might produce a question about why freshly ground beans smell stronger than pre-ground ones. The feature is designed to turn any everyday scene into a personal fun fact of the day.
Each question takes 10 to 30 seconds, according to the company. A session of five questions runs about two to three minutes. The daily question does not require an account. A free account unlocks all features the platform currently offers.
“Curiosity is one of the most fundamental human pursuits, and yet no one had built a tool that takes daily curiosity seriously. If the world hadn’t built it, we figured we had to,” said Yanchong Li, Founder at Igneous AI, LLC.
Igneous AI, LLC is incorporated in Wilmington, Delaware, and operates fully online. The name reflects the founders’ view that the same type of curiosity behind geological fieldwork can be put in front of anyone through a single daily question.
