The beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof has its origins in Sholem Aleichem’s stories of “Tevye the Dairyman.” The stories were published in 1894 in Yiddish, featuring a gruff but loveable patriarch as he copes with an endless stream of financial ups and downs, along with his occasionally tense marriage to sharp-tongued wife Golde, and the love lives of his headstrong daughters’. The setting for the stories is an archetypal “shtetl,” – Eastern European Jewish village. These villages were pretty much wiped out during the late nineteenth century by pogroms (organised massacres) and became entirely demolished in the 20th century by the Nazi Holocaust.
Eventually, Aleichem moved to the USA, however, his Yiddish-language stage adaptation was not performed until 1919 – three years after his death.
Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, and Joseph Stein’s musical adaptation premiered in 1964 on Broadway despite concerns that the production was too culturally specific to achieve mainstream appeal — and was dismissed as “shtetl kitsch” by Jewish novelist Philip Roth. Despite its initial shaky reception, the musical quickly became a hit as the universal theme of family, faith, and the meaning of home resonated with audiences along with its robust humour, and catchy score.
Following its success on Broadway, in 1967 Fiddler On The Roof transferred to the West End, starring Israeli actor Topol as Tevye alongside political activist and sitcom star Miriam Karlin as his wife Golde. The production ran at Her Majesty’s Theatre for 2,030 performances.
Topol, who had already played Tevye in the Tel Aviv production, initially learned the English-language version phonetically. The actor immortalised the role in the 1971 movie adaptation and was nominated for an Oscar. Topol reprised the role for many limited runs, and tours, before, (and after an estimated 3500 performances) playing Tevye in 2009 for the final time.
Fiddler On The Roof enjoyed several revivals from the 1970s to 1990s on Broadway, the West End, on tours, and regionally – and was a star vehicle (notably the great Topol) for a well-known character actor to play the lead character – Tevye. Recent productions have offered new and fresher takes on the material while remaining true to the big-hearted spirit of the show.
Jordan Fein’s new revival was showcased at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2024, led by Adam Dannheisser and Lara Pulver, and received critical acclaim for its deeply moving, and outstanding performances. Tickets to Fiddler On The Roof are already in high demand and can be booked securely from Theatre Tickets London.
The production received 13 Olivier Award nominations – winning three of them: Best Musical Revival, Best Sound Design (Nick Lidster), and Best Set Design (Tom Scutt). As it returns to London this summer to play at the Barbican Theatre prior to a tour, producers will hope for a similar audience reaction. Mazel tov!
