“THE BOLSHOI” is a coming-of-age film telling the story of a young dancer, Yulka, and her journey of pursuing her dream to become a professional ballet dancer. Yulka begins her journey when she is accepted into a prestigious ballet academy from the beautiful and world-renowned Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where she is faced with countless obstacles on her career path.

From Producers Valery Todorovsky Production Company and Marmot Film Studio and financial support from Cinema Fund and Television Channel RUSSIA One, “THE BOLSHOI” has been a box office success since its premiere in Russia and Baltic States, accumulating over one million admissions from both these territories. “THE BOLSHOI” has also had a limited theatrical release in Germany, Austria, Israel, and will be released theatrically in Poland, Japan, and Spain.

The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia is home to the most world-renowned ballet and opera companies in the world. The building itself, built in the early 1900s and since then experiencing much renovation and restoration, serves as a historical landmark of Moscow and a driving force of contribution to Russian performing arts.

The Bolshoi Theatre has been home to many famous ballets, such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker. Today it remains a staple center for performing arts, as it is home to The Bolshoi Ballet, the world’s largest ballet company.

Many dancers will relate to the struggles behind the beauty of professional dance that Yulka experiences, from competing against her closest friends to sacrificing love interests, relationships, and a “normal life” in order to achieve her dreams.

Dancers will also appreciate the amount of authentic talent in the film. Many of the characters are real-life ballerinas and dancers in today’s world, with a passionate lead of Yulka by Margarita Simonova. Alongside are stars, Alisa Freyndlikh, Aleksandr Domogarov (Musical, ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’), Anna Isaeva (Kremlin Ballet Theatre: Swan Lake, Arabian Nights), Valentina Telishkina, and dancer, choreographer, and art director, Nicolas Le Riche

“THE BOLSHOI” is a film about the obstacles of career paths, taking second chances, and achieving your dreams, while emphasizing hard work, drive, and ultimate passion – leaving dancers inspired to pursue their dreams and to be confident in overcoming any challenges faced along the way.
