Houston, TX, USA – July 29, 2021 – Valdene Mark is a Vincentian writer with an M.Ed. in Higher Education, and the founder of Sugar Apple Books – an imprint featuring authors from the Caribbean and African diaspora. Mark encourages stories focusing on promoting imagination, encouraging resilience, and teaching children how to navigate feelings. “I strive to spread joy and share a love of quality books with young readers all around the world,” Mark says. August 14, 2021, Mark’s new children’s book “Under the Mango Tree” is set to release and is currently available for pre-orders on Amazon. Mark says, “I wrote this book because I wanted to focus on the joy of friendship that is found in childhood. I write with a focus on highlighting diverse protagonists as I think representation is especially important in the formative years. I rarely saw myself in children’s literature as a child, so I want to be part of the new wave of authors that represent #ownvoices and are in charge of getting our stories out into the world.”
ABOUT THE BOOK
“Under the Mango Tree” focuses on two best friends, Sanaa and Vee, and how Sanaa faces the challenge of separation when Vee moves away. It focuses on learning the value of friendship and how far it can reach. According to Mark, “The book is heavily inspired by my Caribbean childhood and features a diverse lead that can help your child learn about the lasting impact of friendship, even when you are separated. I think it’s important for Black and Brown children to have books that show them experiencing everyday emotions including joy, sadness, and wonder – and I always write with this in mind.”
