F.I.R.S.T. Institute is a digital media school located in Downtown Orlando that offers affordable, hands-on learning in creative industries. Today, F.I.R.S.T. is unveiling three new Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) courses that offer the same quality education, now available from the comfort of your own home.

What is Interactive Distance Learning?

Interactive Distance Learning is not your typical online education. Students in our IDL programs get the full classroom experience from the comfort of their homes. This is not a “watch a video and answer some questions,” e-learning program. This is a fully-engaged, 11-month diploma program that gives students the opportunity to learn hands-on with all the industry-standard gear, equipment, and software provided in their Creative P.A.K. Each IDL class is a 5-hour block that includes live lectures with instructors, time to work on projects, video conferencing, student-to-student interaction, individual demos, and more.

Recording Arts & Show Production IDL

Over the course of this 11-month program, students will learn the process of music production, recording arts, sound for visual media, audio mixing & mastering, and show production. From working in DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), to creating sound effects for video games and movies, or mixing in Pro Tools and Studio One – all facets of our on-campus program have been adapted and optimized to work at home or on the go.

Digital Filmmaking & Video Production IDL

Students in this program will understand the core fundamentals of storytelling, video technology, media production, and post-production. This comprehensive course covers the intricacies of screenwriting and budgeting, modern cameras and lighting technology, and an in-depth exploration of advanced color correction and audio post-production in the professional editing program DaVinci Resolve.

Graphic Design & Web Development IDL

This online program offers a deep-dive into various elements of design: graphic design principles, digital illustration & photography, UX/UI & web design, motion graphics and animations, and content management systems. Students will learn the core concepts needed to make eye-catching imagery and motion graphics, as well as the practical applications of these concepts in programs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Illustrator. Finally, knowledge of user interfaces and web design will enable students to build their own websites to serve as a digital portfolio of their work.

Creative P.A.K.

Once students are enrolled in any of the three online programs, they’ll receive a Personal Academic Kit, or Creative P.A.K. These packages contain state-of-the-art equipment, such as cameras, audio inputs, and graphics tablets, as well as licenses to professional software – the same technology our students on campus use. The Creative P.A.K. ensures learning consistency between classmates and their instructors, as well as providing a starting point for students to launch their freelance career during their program and beyond.

Career Development

F.I.R.S.T. Institute believes it is important for their students to take courses in Career Development, so they are prepared to secure entry-level employment upon graduation. Students will focus on the design of their personal portfolio which will include a cover letter, resume, business card, and self-marketing social media outlets like LinkedIn, SoundCloud, Behance, and Vimeo. The students move on to complete SMART goals and mock interviews with F.I.R.S.T. Institute faculty, so they are properly prepared to join the work force in the digital media industry.
