Los Angeles, CA – April 14, 2017 – A late night phone call wakes Anna Ellison (Fairuza Balk) from sleep. It’s the news every parent dreads: her 22-year-old son, August, has fallen from a high window. In the aftermath of his tragic death, Anna arrives in the city where he died, alone and out of place. She is forced to unravel the surprising circumstances of her son’s life as she pieces together the reason for its brutal end. The police, concluding that his fatality was self-inflicted, offer little solace. Attempting to make sense of the loss of her only child, she takes up in his old apartment.
There she meets Jonas (Charles Baker), the building’s superintendent. Though guarded at first, Jonas is able to form a tentative bond with Anna through a shared longing for connection in a world that feels strangely desolate. Soon Anna comes to suspect that August’s demise was not the suicide the jaded police maintain. Determined to know the person her son had become and to uncover the reasons for his untimely end, Anna begins an informal investigation of her own. Her questions bring her and Jonas to the dark corners of a criminal underworld, where her own life is suddenly in jeopardy. Desperate to understand the violence that claimed her son, Anna searches for a villain… but soon discovers her own guilt is preventing her from moving on. In AUGUST FALLS, Anna is introduced to the true nature of human cruelty, and forced to confront it on its own shadowy level.
Fairuza Balk is best known for her breakout role in the fantasy horror cult classic, The Craft. She co-starred in The Island of Dr. Moreau with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, and gave an intense performance as a neo-nazi goth-punk opposite Edward Norton in his Academy Award-nominated performance in American History X. Balk was also featured in The Waterboy alongside Adam Sandler, and on popular TV series Fox’s Family Guy and Cartoon Network’s Justice League. Balk most recently starred in the acclaimed Showtime series, Ray Donovan.
AUGUST FALLS also stars Charles Baker (Breaking Bad, The Blacklist), Alanna Ubach (Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, Californication), and Tamara Taylor (Bones, Party of Five).
AUGUST FALLS is adapted from a working novel written my Matthew McKay. Director Sam Hancock (Being Us) was particularly drawn to the complicated character of Anna. “Matt had drawn a psychologically dense portrait of a desperate woman searching for the truth behind the life and mysterious death of her estranged son” Hancock continues, “I really connected with (Matt’s central character) Anna, finding her to be both heroic and flawed, her choices both heartbreaking and completely accessible.” The film is produced by Matthew Donaldson, Amelia Belle, Joshua B. Porter and Alanna Ubach.
AUGUST FALLS is distributed by Tricoast Worldwide and rolls out on platforms beginning April 17 on DirecTV, iTunes, Amazon, Vimeo on Demand, Sony Playstation, Microsoft Xbox, Google Play, Hoopla, FilxFling and Vudu.
