F. Scott Service‘s Playing Soldier wins a Book Excellence Award in the Memoir category. Founded in Toronto, Ontario, the Book Excellence Awards is an international book awards competition dedicated to recognizing both independent and traditionally published authors and publishers for excellence in writing, design and overall market appeal. Previous Winners and Finalists of the Book Excellence Awards have doubled their book sales, garnered attention from film producers, received distribution in book stores and increased their visibility and media attention.
“I really didn’t expect anything when I entered the contest, so I was flabbergasted, speechless when I got the news. It was such a delightful surprise,” saysScott. “Playing Soldieris about the unlearning of expectation and the cultivation of a true inner self and it must have made an impression somehow. I’m glad the folks at Book Excellence recognized it.”
The book has already received some great reviews from industry leaders such as Self-Publishing Review: “A riveting reflection on life, loss, service, and sacrifice, Playing Soldier is an original and intense memoir that shakes up one’s assumptions of a soldier’s life. Rarely does a memoir feel this raw and immediate, as though some part of the author never left the far-flung places that changed his life forever. This nontraditional memoir that embraces experimentation in storytelling is an unabashedly unique and captivating read,” and Readers’ Favorite: “Author F. Scott Service offers a candid, raw, and highly emotional slice of the soul in this unforgettable and well-crafted work,” as well as Pacific Book Review: “An honest, powerful and expertly crafted read.”
The book was also named winner of the 2021 IndieReader Discovery Awards for memoir.
