ATLANTA, Ga. – September 10, 2026 – With Georgia’s motorcycle riding season stretching through much of the year, recent fatal crashes across metro Atlanta are renewing attention on the risks riders face while sharing congested roads with passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services has noted that the state’s motorcycle season typically runs from March through December, giving riders nearly year-round access to the road. That extended season also means motorcycles remain a regular presence on busy Atlanta highways, arterial roads and suburban corridors well beyond the traditional summer riding months.
National traffic safety data further illustrates the vulnerability of motorcycle riders. In 2024, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in U.S. traffic crashes, accounting for 16% of all traffic fatalities nationwide despite motorcycles representing a much smaller share of registered vehicles.

During the summer, fatal motorcycle crashes were reported on I-20 and I-285, including a July collision involving a motorcycle and two tractor-trailers. In early September, a 24-year-old Atlanta Police Department recruit died following a motorcycle crash on Moreland Avenue.
