European Region is the Largest Automotive Radar Market: P&S Intelligence

The automotive radar market size is projected to cross $9.4 billion by 2023, according to a report published by P&S Intelligence.

An automotive radar is used to locate objects, such as vehicles and pedestrians, in the vicinity of the car. A radar consists of a receiver and a transmitter. The transmitter sends out radio waves that hit an object and bounce back to the receiver. By controlling the direction in which radio waves are sent and received it is possible to detect objects’ distance, speed and direction. This requires steerable antennas that can be automatically directed or receive signals simultaneously from several different directions.

Geographically, Europe is estimated to account for the highest revenue share in the global market, with 37.8% contribution in 2017. For the past few years, the European Commission has been working alongside various European Union (EU) member states, and other countries to drive the automotive radar market and unleash its full potential. The commission has initiated the 79 GHz project, which focuses on worldwide harmonized frequency allocation for vehicular radars in the frequency range 77 GHz to 81 GHz. Countries such as Ukraine, Turkey, Belarus, Georgia, and Russian among others have approved the use of 79 GHz band for automotive high-resolution short-range radars. However, will have identical provisions as those set by the European Commission and by ETSI standard EN 302 264.

The European region is the hub for prominent premium car manufacturers including Mercedes Benz, BMW, AUDI and Volkswagen group among others. In addition, the German automotive industry accounts for approximately 40% of the premium car production. Owing to the increasing stringency in vehicle safety norms, the automotive component manufacturers have diverted their focus towards development of low-cost radar-based safety systems.
