Escaped The Acne, But Left With The Scars, What Now

Regardless of type of skin or age, everyone can agree that the average blemish or pimple is a frustrating thing to deal with. It is one of the most prevalent inflammatory skin diseases and it’s estimated to affect over 9% of the global population and over 5 million Canadians. Equally nerve-racking is being left with the scars long after the acne has cleared, which is a frequent complication.

Unfortunately for women, they make up about 75% of adult acne cases. And it makes people feel just as insecure and emotionally vulnerable as teens do when dealing with this, according to psychologists.Even when people manage to get rid of acne and think they can breathe easily now that they don’t have to worry about the painful eruptions, many times the scars still remain. And it does not apply only to the most severe cases, even mild acne can cause scarring.

It is estimated that 95% of all acne patients will be left with scars of various degrees, depending on the severity of the condition, how much they pick at their spots and pimples and how they keep them under control.Luckily, nowadays there are many options available to address and alleviate scarring, including chemical peels, microneedling, lasers, and dermal fillers. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment, laser treatment for scar removal has shown improvements of up to 50% even in the most complicated of cases.

To add even more to the burden, a survey of Canadian acne patients revealed that 92% had their faces as the most affected areas, while 45% had back acne and 47% had it on their chests. Removing acne scars is a stubborn process and for a very long time the most effective option was considered to be plastic surgery.

A specific technology known as Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing has been medically proven to be highly efficient to reducing or eliminating acne depression. And there is scientific evidence to back it all up. One study which enrolled 15 women aged between 25 and 45 years old and aiming to achieve acne scar removal showed visible benefits after three sessions. All women reported significant improvements in skin texture due to reduction in the depth and size ofscars: 5-25% at the first session, 15-50% at the second one, while the last one registered 20-70%. What’s even more promising is that there were no side effects following Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatment: no pigmentation changes, no infections. The experts had 6 month follow-ups with the participants and improvements continued long after the treatment stopped.
