Elk Grove, CA – February 26, 2021 – Ethan Ho from Franklin High School in the Elk Grove Unified School District took first place in the National Governors Association Cyber Competition. The competition was hosted for the 4th year in a row and students from high schools throughout the nation were invited to participate in the free, virtual event. Students who participated were tested on their knowledge of general trivia, cybersecurity, and problem-solving skills.

Ethan Ho placed first out of 1,425 students competing across 43 states in the competition. The district is extremely proud of his work and accomplishments and the teachers who helped him get there. Ethan was recognized for his exciting win by the Governor of Louisiana in the National Governors Association Cyber Summit on Thursday, January 21st. In addition to the special address from the Governor acknowledging Ethan, he was also awarded a cyber:bot™ for his personal use.

Along with Ethan’s individual prize for winning, his classroom at Franklin High School is also being awarded a $1,500 technology grant to further promote and teach cybersecurity at the school. The grant was generously provided by the Cybersecurity Youth Apprenticeship Initiative or CYAI, an effort funded by the US Department of Labor.

In response to receiving the award, Ethan’s teacher Christopher Shuping expressed his gratitude for the donation saying, “Thank you so much for the generous award. Keeping up with security technology is a challenge, and this will support our networking and cybersecurity initiatives for our computer science students.”
