ELK GROVE, Calif. – October 5, 2018 – Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) 2018 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores continue to reflect steady upward advancement. 55 percent of students across all grade levels tested (grades 3-8 and 11) scored as standard “met” or “exceeded” in English language arts (ELA), reflecting a one percentage point gain compared to last year. 45 percent of students across all grade levels tested (grades 3-8 and 11) scored as standard “met” or “exceeded” in math, also reflecting a one percentage point advance compared to last year.

Christopher R. Hoffman, Superintendent of Elk Grove Unified schools, expressed optimism saying, “Notable and promising moderate growth indicates that resources we dedicated to help students in target areas aids our efforts to close the achievement gap. Following the cohort of 3rd grade students from 2015, the percentage of students meeting or exceeded the standard has gradually increased by 12 percentage points to 57% in 2018. “Since the district first administered the SBAC assessments in 2015, the percentage of 3rd and 4th grade students meeting or exceeded standards have both increased by 11 percentage points.” Hoffman attributed the steady momentum to an improved learning system culture that is focused on high quality instruction, goal setting, purposeful analysis of student data, the well-being and safety of every child, and family and community engagement.

With gratitude, he noted, “Human development involves more than academics alone. Our students need to feel safe in their classrooms and at school, appreciated for every contribution and attempt at success they make and valued. I appreciate every district employee for having the best interest of students top of mind, collaborating to continue the work of closing the achievement gap, engaging students at school, believing in restorative practices and aiming to prepare every student, in every classroom, in every subject, every day, to be college, career and life ready upon graduation.”

SBAC English language arts comparison to county and state:

Across all grade levels tested, (grades 3-8 and 11), 55% of students scored as standard “met” or “exceeded,” outperforming students in Sacramento County and the state by 8 percentage points and 5 percentage points respectively.

Overall English language arts results by grade level:

EGUSD outperformed the county and the state at every grade level (except at 11th grade compared to the state) in overall English language arts. The percentage of district students who scored as standard “met” or “exceeded” by grade level are:

• 56% of 3rd grade EGUSD students, 10 percentage points higher than the county, and 8 percentage points higher than the state.

• 55% of 4th grade EGUSD students, 9 percentage points higher than the county, and 6 percentage points higher than the state.

• 53% of 5th grade EGUSD students, 8 percentage points higher than the county, and 4 percentage points higher than the state.

• 57% of 6th grade EGUSD students, 11 percentage points higher than the county, and 9 percentage points higher than the state.

• 56% of 7th grade EGUSD students, 9 percentage points higher than the county, and 6 percentage points higher than the state.

• 53% of 8th grade EGUSD students, 5 percentage points higher than the county, and 4 percentage points higher than the state.

• 56% of 11th grade EGUSD students, 4 percentage points higher than the county, and the same as the state.

Claim level results in English language arts:

Claim level EGUSD results show Listening as a relative strength with 82 percent of students at “above” or “near” standard in that area. In comparison, 78% of students in Sacramento County and 80% of students in the state were “above” or “near” standard in Listening.

The percentages of students scoring “above” or “near” standard in other claim area results are:

• Reading: 74% of district students, compared to 68% of students in Sacramento County and 69% of students in the state.

• Writing: 75% of district students, compared to 67% of students in Sacramento County and 71% of students in the state.

• Research/Inquiry: 80% of district students, compared to 74% of students in Sacramento County and 76% of students in the state.

SBAC mathematics comparison to county and state:

Across all grade levels tested, (grades 3-8 and 11), 45% of students scored as standard “met” or “exceeded,” outperforming students in Sacramento County and the state by 8 percentage points and 6 percentage points respectively.

Overall math results by grade level:

EGUSD outperformed Sacramento County and the state at every grade level in overall math results. The percentages of district and county students who scored as standard “met” or “exceeded” by grade level are:

• 55% of 3rd grade EGUSD students, 9 percentage points higher than the county, and 6 percentage points higher than the state.

• 48% of 4th grade EGUSD students, 8 percentage points higher than the county, and 5 percentage points higher than the state.

• 38% of 5th grade EGUSD students, 7 percentage points higher than the county, and 2 percentage points higher than the state.

• 48% of 6th grade EGUSD students, 10 percentage points higher than the county and 10 percentage points higher than the state.

• 46% of 7th grade EGUSD students, 9 percentage points higher than the county, and 9 percentage points higher than the state.

• 44% of 8th grade EGUSD students, 7 percentage points higher than the county, and 7 percentage points higher than the state.

• 34% of 11th grade EGUSD students, 5 percentage points higher than the county, and 3 percentage points higher than the state.

Claim level results in math:

Claim level EGUSD results show a relative area of strength in Communicating Reasoning, as 73% of students scored “above” or “near” standard in that area. In comparison, 67% of students in Sacramento County and 68% of students in the state were “above” or “near” standard in Communicating Reasoning.

The percentages of students scoring “above” or “near” standard in other claim areas are:

• Concepts and Procedures:  63% of district students, compared to 55% of students in Sacramento County and 56% of students in the state.

• Problem Solving and Modeling/Data Analysis: 68% of district students, compared to 62% of students in Sacramento County and 63% of students in the state.
