Electronic Cigarettes Not the Answer to Quitting Smoking Completely Claims Brisbane Hypnotherapist

E-Cigarettes Can Be Helpful as HRT (Harm Reduction Therapy) but Do Not Break the Psychological Associations Needed to Quit Smoking

The rise in usage of electronic cigarettes has been nothing short of spectacular over the past five years. At first decried by the medical community and following many attempts to have them banned or reclassified as a medical device (which would have effectively banned them), the research data slowly proved that they did have a positive effect in terms of moving people away from tobacco cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes provide similar experience to smoking tobacco cigarettes. They look like a cigarette, produce a vapour that is inhaled and contain varying levels of nicotine to simulate the addictive part of the smoking experience for the user. Where they differ is that the vapour produced is water vapour not smoke and the ingredients used to create the electronic cigarette experience are basically harmless. Tobacco cigarettes on the other hand create a toxic mixture of 4000+ chemicals of which at least 86 are known to be carcinogens such as Arsenic, Ammonia, Benzene and Formaldehyde to name but a few.

Today in a statement by Brisbane Hypnotherapist Maureen Hamilton, who warned that whilst electronic cigarettes have now been shown to be a useful harm reduction therapy (HRT), they do not address the underlying psychological attachments to smoking for those people looking to quit the habit completely.

She explained, “The habit of smoking cigarettes is both chemical and psychological. The chemical element being the addictive nature of nicotine and the harmful chemical nature of the smoke that tobacco produces that causes cancer and kills you. Whilst electronic cigarettes can go someway to removing the cancer causing element of the smoking habit, it does not address the psychological attachment nor does it remove the addiction to nicotine.”

Maureen Hamilton is a qualified nurse and trained Hypnotherapist. Her passion for campaigning against the tobacco industry and promoting education of the dangers of smoking are rooted in her own personal narrative. Her husband, Hugh B Hamilton, died aged just 47 from smoking related illnesses leaving her to raise four children by herself. Since training as a Hypnotherapist she has helped over 2000 people to quit smoking and uniquely offers a guarantee to continue to revisit her clients once they quit should they ever feel the urge to return to smoking.

She continued, “Electronic cigarettes have done a great service in that they will reduce the number of deaths from smoking related diseases over the coming years. However, for those people who wish to quit the smoking habit completely they fall short of the help that is required to do so.”
