EIGHT-TIME MAJOR WINNER TOM WATSON COMMITS TO SEVENTH ANNUAL MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CLASSIC

GWINNETT, METRO ATLANTA – Officials of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic announced today that World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Watson will compete in the seventh installment of the prestigious PGA TOUR Champions event at TPC Sugarloaf. From April 15-21, one of golf’s most iconic figures will be returning to the field along with PGA Championship winners John Daly, David Toms and Larry Nelson.

Tom Watson, 69, is one of the most admired professional golfers of all time. Since joining the PGA TOUR in 1971, he has captured 39 titles and eight majors. Of these majors, Watson dominated two Masters Tournaments, one U.S. Open and a remarkable five The Open Championship titles. A PGA TOUR Champions member since 1999, Watson’s impressive record includes 14 victories, six of which have been majors. The two-time Charles Schwab Cup champion earned his last major title with the 2011 Senior PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The six-time PGA TOUR Player of the Year and two-time U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain will be making his fifth start at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. Watson’s best finish originally came in 2013 with a T17 effort until he matched this finish in 2016. He finished T66 in 2017 after rounds of 70-77-73 and last year, he finished T71 after rounds of 78-78-74. So far this season, the Kansas City resident has one top-10 finish, No. 51 Charles Schwab Cup ranking and a 69-scoring average.

Two-time major champion, John Daly, is one of the most recognizable figures in golf. He has recorded five-career PGA TOUR titles and his major victories include the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 The Open Championship. After his 1991 major victory, the 52-year-old Arkansas resident was named PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year. “Long John’s” PGA TOUR Champions resume includes one title and six top-10 finishes since his 2016 debut. This season, Daly is ranked 63 in Charles Schwab Cup points with a scoring average of 74. He will be making his third Mitsubishi Electric Classic start this April after finishing T12 in 2016 and 2017.

Louisiana resident and 13-time PGA TOUR winner David Toms has recorded one major victory since joining the TOUR in 1991. In 2001, Toms defeated Phil Mickelson for the PGA Championship title, and now ranks 17th on the PGA TOUR Career Money Leaders with more than $41 million in earnings. The 52-year-old has been a member of three U.S. Ryder Cup teams, three U.S. Presidents Cup teams and has continued to dominate the PGA TOUR Champions since joining in 2017. He has earned 21 top-10 finishes and won his first PGA TOUR Champions title at the 2018 U.S. Senior Open. So far this season, Toms has posted three top-10 finishes, earning him a ranking of No. 4 in Charles Schwab Cup points and giving him a scoring average of 68.47. This will be his third appearance at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, after finishing T34 in 2017 and T51 in 2018.

Veteran and World Golf Hall of Famer Larry Nelson will be making his seventh start at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic this year. The Marietta, Georgia resident has appeared in every tournament since its inception; his best finish being a T66 effort in 2016 and 2018. 71-year-old Nelson boasts 10 PGA TOUR titles, including three majors, since joining the TOUR in 1973. The celebrated Southerner won the U.S. Open in 1983 and captured two PGA Championship titles in 1981 and 1987. Nelson has also recorded an impressive PGA TOUR Champions career since he entered in 1997. His resume consists of 19 titles, 114 top-10 finishes, and he was the recipient of the 2011 PGA Distinguished Service Honor Award.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Electric Classic is scheduled for April 15-21, 2019 at TPC Sugarloaf. The public may purchase tickets online.
