Dual Immersion Schools in Palmdale School District Commit to Preparing Students to be Global Citizens

Palmdale School District is proud to be the home of two dual immersion schools which provide students with a bilingual education and a multicultural atmosphere for learning. Los Amigos and Dos Caminos Dual Immersion Schools take the California State Standards in education and deliver them to their students in English and Spanish. The popularity of Dual Immersion programs is growing rapidly due to the lasting positive effects, socially and educationally, upon students.

In Dual Immersion programs like those at Los Amigos and Dos Caminos, students enjoy three main advantages.  First, students are able to develop full literacy in two languages, including speaking, reading and writing. Students also achieve at grade level standards similar or even higher than their peers in a non bilingual setting. One of the most important advantages to a Dual Immersion education is that students are better prepared to take part in the global society as bilingual and biliterate citizens.

Los Amigos serves students in Kindergarten through eighth grade and is strives to continue bringing a legacy of success to the community. By building strong relationships between parents, students, staff, and community partners, Los Amigos fosters a nurturing and safe environment where children can be prepared for their futures. The focus of the school is building 21st Century skills, using data to improve instruction, and providing consistent strategies to help students reach their highest achievement capabilities. Principal Sonia Salcedo says, “It is my hope that we will work together to provide the students of Los Amigos Dual Immersion School the best possible opportunities in preparing them to be world class citizens ready to master the challenges of the 21st Century with a solid foundation created here at our school.”

Laura Cervantes, Principal of Dos Caminos Dual Immersion School, grew up as an English Language Learner herself and appreciates the chance students at her school have to explore, discover, and learn how languages work starting in Kindergarten. Dos Caminos is a 2017 recipient of the California Association of Bilingual Education Seal of Excellence Award and is committed to providing every student with a well-rounded education. Staff and teachers are Dos caminos believe in every child’s ability to learn and thrive, and Principal Cervantes says that,  “Each day at school your child will be supported academically, socially and emotionally, through a variety of focused, engaging and relevant experiences that meet the unique needs of each student.”

In addition to the superb dual immersion programs offered at Dos Caminos and Los Amigos, both schools have a long list of other programs and recognitions that add to the overall positive atmosphere of each school. Los Amigos has 4 CABE Teachers of the Year, one NABE teacher of the Year, one Parent of the Year, and has been awarded the Seal of Excellence. Los Amigos is also in the process of seeking WASC accreditation. Dos Caminos has two teachers awarded the CABE Teachers of the Year, one Parent Community Liaison awarded with the 2017 Para-Educator of the Year Award, and was the recipient of  the 2017 Seal of Excellence.
