Xerox Corporate Fellow and Adjunct Professor at Purdue, Dr. Santokh Badesha, was recognized for developing color laser printing and expanding the use of laser printing.

November 17, 2022 – Dr. Santokh Badesha, a National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow, was awarded the 2022 Mountbatten Medal of Honor by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), honoring his groundbreaking work in laser printing technology.

According to IET, The Mountbatten Medal is awarded to someone who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of electronics or information technology over time.

“I am truly honored and thankful to receive this distinguished recognition from the IET,” says Badesha. “It is a testament to the encouragement that Xerox and Purdue Engineering have provided me over the years to take ideas from test tubes to customer hands using fundamental scientific and engineering principles.”

Internationally, Badesha is known as the man who made digital print-on-demand possible, which has expanded and transformed businesses around the world. His technology has also been used in nearly all Xerox products for over 25 years.

He holds 263 U.S. patents, with dozens more pending. Badesha is responsible for developing technology that increases the performance of lasers in printers while lowering the cost and environmental impact. His patents include fuser subsystems, which melt and bond colored toners when transferred to paper to create an image, and intermediate transfer belts, which allow for the development of a colored image.

NAI President and Founder Dr. Sanberg commented, “I was delighted to hear that our colleague Dr. Santokh Badesha has received this most prestigious honor. It was my great pleasure to preside at his induction as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors this past year. With more than 250 U.S. patents, he is one of the world’s most accomplished and prolific inventors.”

About NAI:

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) is a member-based organization of patent-holding inventors at academic institutions and nonprofit research organizations across the U.S. and the globe. Founded in 2011, its mission is to recognize and encourage inventors, increase the visibility of innovation and academic research, and mentor the next generation of inventors to create a better society for all.

With a membership of more than 4,000 from 250 institutions, NAI members have won 44 Nobel Prizes and 63 U.S. Medals of Science, Technology, and Innovation. They hold more than 53,000 patents and have started over 13,000 licensed technologies and companies, creating 1 million jobs and $3 trillion in revenue.

The NAI’s current Joint Agreement with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) aims to correct the systemic and cultural challenges of the patent process to increase diversity and inclusion.
