Renowned Dominican-American fashion designer Sully Bonnelly continues to solidify his legacy as one of the most influential voices in contemporary women’s fashion. With a celebrated career spanning more than four decades, Bonnelly has become internationally recognized for blending sophistication, cultural richness, and timeless elegance into every collection he creates.
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Bonnelly’s passion for fashion emerged early, inspired by the women in his family and their appreciation for formal eveningwear and refined style. After studying architecture at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, he moved to New York in 1980 to pursue fashion design at Parsons School of Design, graduating in 1983 before beginning his career under legendary designer Oscar de la Renta.
Over the years, Bonnelly has held influential creative roles across some of fashion’s most respected houses, including Bill Blass, Eli Tahari, Isaac Mizrahi New York, and Oscar de la Renta’s O Oscar Collection. In 1993, he launched his own label, Sully Bonnelly LTD, later known as Sully Bonnelly International, with collections carried by luxury retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman.
Widely respected for his ability to merge classic elegance with modern sensibilities, Bonnelly also made history as the first Latin American designer featured on a shopping network through his successful HSN collection, Sully Bonnelly Accents. His impact expanded into bridal fashion, contemporary sportswear, and mass-market collaborations, including his long-running partnership with Jumbo.
Throughout his career, Bonnelly has received numerous prestigious recognitions, including the Golden Coast Fashion Award Designer of the Year, the Governor’s Award of Excellence from New York Governor George Pataki, and honors from the Dominican Republic recognizing his contributions to fashion and culture abroad. In 2001, he was elected as a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), further cementing his standing within the global fashion industry.
Beyond fashion, Bonnelly remains deeply committed to philanthropy and community service. He serves as Vice-President of the Vergel Foundation alongside his husband, Robert Littman, supporting charitable and cultural initiatives. He has also volunteered extensively with organizations focused on women’s empowerment, education, and food assistance programs in New York.
