Domestic Abuse Survivor, Advocate and Thriver Mildred Muhammad Writes for the National Domestic Violence Hotline\’s Blog

October 1, 2018 – Women have internalized, from the first sign of abuse, that they are alone, abuse is their fault and is actually a part of love. That is just plain wrong! Mildred Muhammad is on a mission to make the truth known and to spread it far and wide. Mildred received an invitation to write for the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s blog. Read Mildred Muhammad’s blog post for the National Domestic Violence Hotline published on September 25, 2018. Domestic abuse/violence has no boundaries, whether verbal, economic, educational, gender, race or sexual orientation. It shows how it is habitual to look for excuses for the abusers and continue to blame the victims.

Mildred is one of those survivors who went on to become advocates to bring awareness to society that domestic violence is a worldwide epidemic. She has emerged as “one of the nation’s most powerful advocates for victims and survivors of domestic violence”, as described by WROC-TV, Rochester, NY.

Mildred experienced victim-blaming from the community too, which blames her for her former husband, John Allen Muhammad, the DC Snipers’ crime of killing innocent people in the DC area in 2002. If you would have stayed with him, he would have only killed you, they said. Law enforcement did not inform the community that SHE was the intended target.

In her blog post, Mildred also points to the silent scars of abuse and quotes a statistic: the US Department of Justice reveals that 80% of victims do not carry visible signs or scars of violence. These victims go unnoticed compared to the rest.

Mildred’s children have now grown up and are doing well. John (28), Salena (26) and Taalibah (25) are great in their careers and the community. Mildred too has gone beyond her past, and is today an award-winning global keynote speaker, certified consultant with the US Department of Justice/Office for victims of crime, and speaker for the US Department of State. She has contributed to CNN, authored five books, and is assisting victims as a certified domestic violence advocate, intuitive life coach, trainer and educator.
