Seth Rudetsky, a theater personality and Playbill columnist, wrote and stars in Disaster! The play, a parody of 1970s disaster movies, was performed off-Broadway in 2012 and 2013. It is set to officially open at Broadway’s Nederlander Theater on March 9 with a limited engagement scheduled to run through July 3.
The book was co-written by Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick. Plotnick also directs the play, which stars Tony winner Roger Bart, Tony winner Faith Pierce, Tony nominee Kevin Chamberlin, Tony nominee Adam Pascal, Tony nominee Kerry Butler, Drama Desk winner Rachel York, and Drama Desk nominee Jennifer Simard.
The characters sing, dance, and gamble aboard New York’s first floating casino and discotheque. The party goes on even after the ship is confronted with threats from an earthquake, a tidal wave, and a swarm of bees. The score includes many songs from the decade, including “Hot Stuff,” “I Am Woman,” “Knock on Wood,” and “Daybreak.”
Disaster! debuted in 2012 with a two-month run off-off-Broadway at the Triad Theatre. The show then ran for six months off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre in 2013.
