Demand-Driven Manufacturing Technology Makes VMI Easier According to Synchrono

Demand-driven manufacturing technology makes Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) easier. The technologies Synchrono customers use to manage their internal Demand-Driven Manufacturing initiatives have the added benefit of making VMI feasible. Electronic Kanban (eKanban) software is a classic example.

Many manufacturers saw Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) as a way to reduce inventory levels and costs – and for suppliers, it was a way to lock in business. VMI, however, comes with inherent risks to both the manufacturer and the supplier. For manufacturers, the risk is in the reliability of the supplier. On the supplier’s side, the risk lay in the manufacturer’s ability to forecast demand.

An eKanban system enables real-time, electronic demand signaling. As materials are received into inventory, they are scanned into the system – and, they are scanned again when consumed. Upon consumption, a signal is automatically sent to the supplier or contract manufacturer, bypassing the standard procurement process and shortening cycle times. eKanban can make VMI more functionally feasible and efficient than it was twenty years ago.

In true pull-based or Demand-Driven Manufacturing, replenishment is based on actual demand or consumption. Projected and actual demand, demand variability, and supplier reliability are monitored, and inventory is right-sized to meet these specific attributes of the item. eKanban software allows Demand-Driven manufacturers to continually adjust inventory levels so they are always in alignment with demand, supply expectations and actuals.  As variability is removed and lead-times are reduced, the eKanban software adjusts to become one step closer to demand.

About Synchrono

Synchrono (www.synchrono.com) demand-driven manufacturing software synchronizes complex manufacturing environments in real-time, to drive business results. For almost twenty years, Synchrono systems have helped discrete manufacturers, engineer-to-order manufacturers, and others manage constraints, improve flow and drive on-time production.

When integrated under the Synchrono Demand-Driven Manufacturing Platform, lean and demand-driven initiatives achieve new levels of excellence, transforming businesses by synchronizing people, processes, machines, materials, and data to drive production flow from order inception to delivery.

The award winning Synchrono Demand-Driven Manufacturing Platform offers five system components, including a planning, scheduling, and production management system and ekanban software for real-time inventory replenishment and supply chain collaboration. The Synchrono Platform has a unique a data collection, historian, and automated workflow engine along with an application that generates automatic alerts, escalation and action plans to minimize disruptions. Perhaps most importantly, this technology platform also includes a real-time visual factory information system.

Synchrono systems allow for the simultaneous exchange of data across systems and resources, the ability to respond to constraints and changes in demand as they occur, and to predict, pre-empt, and prioritize issues.  The Platform components may be implemented independently or collectively to enable the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), providing an unprecedented foundation for communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
