Zero Sized Intelligence

When we take a deep look back in time to around the 1900s, computers were interestingly in existence, however, back then, they would literally be the size of a room.

Over time and due to technological developments and huge leaps forwards, computers became more sophisticated. They began to have many different components and over time, became smaller and smaller.

We began to have the power of computers on our desks, then in your lap, and of course, in our palm as the 2.7 billion smartphone users worldwide can confirm. Experts say, over a third of the population are making the most of palm-sized computer technology.

However, the newest technological advancement set to take consumers, commerce, and the way we live by storm, is known as ‘Zero’. Looking forward to the next decade, there will be computers small enough to be installed anywhere.

For example, on the clothes, you are wearing, to the cup you are drinking out of, and even on your person.

According to experts, the time for much smaller or Zero sized intelligence is upon us, as we are now nearing the end of Moore’s Law.

Gordon Moore, one of the co-founders of Intel and the author of Moore’s Law, predicted that professor speeds would double approximately every two years and within this idea, that the technology required would become smaller, with the added bonus of driving down the cost of general computing alongside its smaller size.

As computers have indeed become smaller as predicted, some types are powered only by a mere 5 atoms. According to experts, we are looking at the development of single atom development within the next two decades, with ‘atomic transmitters’ replacing the chips used currently.

Twenty years ago all of this may have sounded like science fiction, but if you ask Intel futurist Brian David Johnson, planning a future based on new technologies requires you to be able to think out of the box and with a high level of imagination.

“According to experts, the time for much smaller or Zero sized intelligence is upon us, as we are now nearing the end of Moore’s Law.”

Johnson’s keynote address at a government forum on cloud computing talks about his work, which he describes as future-casting. This look at how technology is due to advance over the coming years is a combination of science fiction, social science, and engineering.

He is, himself, an engineer, and by his own admission describes himself as pragmatist and that he is not able to predict the future.  Future-castings a process for developing a vision for the future considering research, global trends and what people expect to do with technology in ten or twenty years.

Intel designs computer chips years in advance of when they actually reach the marketplace and within this arena, Johnson said that within the next 10 years, the size of chips will be so small they will be able to be installed literally anywhere…

“To think the size of computational intelligence approaches zero… when you get computing power that small it means that we can turn anything into a computer and we have to ask ourselves what we want to do.  What is the effect we want all of this computational power to have on the lives of people,” said Johnson.
