Delft Imaging fights COVID-19 with its CAD4COVID innovation across Ghana

CAD4COVID
Delft Imaging fights the COVID-19 pandemic by scaling its groundbreaking CAD4COVID innovation at 54 screening sites across Ghana

Developed by the sister company, Thirona and with funding from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), CAD4COVID is built upon the renowned CAD4TB innovation that is used to screen tuberculosis worldwide: a disease that kills around 1.4 million people each year. CAD4TB uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect tuberculosis by analyzing chest X-ray images.

By analyzing chest X-ray images, CAD4COVID detects abnormalities in the lungs that are associated to COVID-19. CAD4COVID is now used worldwide to triage COVID-19 cases and track the progress of COVID-19 in cases. It does this by scoring the likelihood of COVID-19 and indicating the affected lung tissue.

One of CAD4COVID’s biggest impact stories is its nation-wide implementation across Ghana. The healthcare system in Ghana faces many challenges, especially in rural areas where people often have to travel long distances to access healthcare. Detection and prevention of diseases are two such strategies employed by the Ghanaian government to help improve healthcare in Ghana, especially for those who do not have easy access to medical care.

In light of the global COVID-19 epidemic, Delft Imaging has supported the Ghanaian government by installing CAD4COVID at 54 screening sites, including hospitals and screening vans, spread across 12 regions. So far, 14,000 people in Ghana have been screened using CAD4COVID. This has empowered the Ghanaian healthcare system to ramp up COVID-19 detection, especially in rural areas.

Besides Ghana, many countries are benefiting from the innovative AI technology. More than 40 countries around the world use CAD4COVID for X-ray to identify COVID-19 cases. For many users around the world, CAD4COVID has been a game-changer in the fight against the global pandemic. Ultimately, AI promotes resource-efficiency at screening sites and can alleviate burdens related to pathology testing. Delft Imaging and its partner are proud to be part of such high-impact projects.
