MARIETTA, GA – October 10, 2026 – A season can feel familiar until someone starts writing down exactly when things happen.
For more than 50 years, Frederic Buse did just that.
His book, Trends Due to Climate Change: The Effects of Climate, Weather, and Environmental Changes on the Annual Cycle of Life on the Flora and Fauna in a Suburban Backyard, brings together decades of observations from his backyard in a suburban development west of Allentown, Pennsylvania. What began with handwritten notes grew into more than 1,000 pages of observations, followed by increasingly detailed records of birds, plants, animals, insects, weather and the recurring events of the seasons.
Published by Author’s Tranquility Press, the book approaches climate change at an unusually personal scale. Rather than beginning with distant landscapes, Buse looks at what happened outside his own window.
Over time, patterns emerged.
Buse records that from 1985 to 2024, peak fall leaf color shifted more than two weeks later. His review also found later timing in migrating birds arriving or passing through, as well as changes in when he picked apples. Individual years did not move steadily in one direction, and Buse emphasizes weather as a major factor, but his broader records showed general occurrences taking place later.
Bird migration offered an especially complicated picture. In his March records, Buse notes that some species shifted their arrival forward by two or three weeks, others moved later by two weeks, and three species moved from the fourth week of March into the third week of February. He also records 31 species migrating across the area during March over a 38-year period.
The backyard itself changed, too.
When Buse arrived in 1969, the three-quarter-acre property was part of a relatively new development created from a cornfield, with only a few trees planted by the developer. Over the decades, the landscape matured. Trees grew, gardens developed and the wildlife using the property changed with them. Buse began keeping garden records in 1982 and gradually expanded them to include wildlife, weather and daily temperatures.
That long view is what gives Trends Due to Climate Change its distinctive character. It is not simply about what appeared in a backyard. It is about when it appeared, how long it stayed and what changed when decades were placed side by side.
For readers interested in climate, gardening, birds, phenology or the changing rhythms of the natural world, the book offers a reason to look closer: environmental change can become visible in something as familiar as the timing of autumn leaves, a migrating bird or the season’s first signs of life.
